Lauri Puzzle

I gave Honey Pot the next in her set of Lauri puzzles. She played with this for a good long while this morning, and it was a nice introduction to the number 5. We counted the houses multiple times, and she was able to identify the written number too.

Magnetic Pom Poms

It has been a while since we played with Honey Pot's magnetic pom poms, so I pulled them out again today. The printable came from Making Learning Fun, and ties in nicely with the next activity we did today!

Five Little Monkeys

This is a popular song and book that I thought would be fun to include in our activities today. I found a short video at Super Simple Songs for me to introduce the theme to Honey Pot. We watched it once through, then I pulled out a worksheet I made (using the printables at 1+1+1=1). Honey Pot jumped the little monkeys on the bed while we watched the video a second time. Afterward, we counted the monkeys and she placed them on the numbered spaces above the bed. I laminated these so they would withstand future use too!

High Five

I wanted to include this in today's number 5 unit, because it is something she does so often without understanding its name. I traced her hand-print (from our Left and Right unit) onto cardstock, cut it out and labeled the fingers 1-5. Then I glued a craft stick to it. After she pointed out that it was a hand, I asked her to count the fingers on the hand. We did this a couple times. Then we talked about how when we say "gimme five" we are asking for all five fingers. So she started high-fiving the hand. :)

I introduced the next in her set of Lauri puzzles. She loved the fish! "Glub, glub, glub!"

Which Is Four?

I made these in Photoshop Elements. After showing Honey Pot what the number 4 looks like, I asked her to point them out in each group of numbers. She didn't do as well as she usually does with this activity. But I'm not surprised. She can count to 15 sometimes, but always skips this number! I'll be doing a review after we cover 5, so we'll get it eventually!

Pom Pom Book

I found these fun printables at Child Care Land. Pom poms are always fun to play with, even if not in the way I meant for them to be. Honey Pot put the pom poms onto the circles once or twice, then had her Mickey and Minnie Mouse toys trample through the box. Oh well! I'll pull this activity out again after we've covered a few more numbers.

Sesame Street Video

I found a fun Elmo video on You Tube to help teach Honey Pot the number 4. I always try to plan my activities during the weekend...and this song has been stuck in my head since then! But she loved it. We watched it a couple of times, and then we acted it out with the duck puppets I made (see below). Note: I do not own the rights to this video!

Lauri Puzzle

I love these puzzles, and introducing one at a time makes it feel like we are giving her a new toy every week! She enjoyed exploring this puzzle, and even drove the "choo choo chains" around for a bit!

Which Is Three? - Numeral and Picture

I made these in Photoshop Elements. She was better able to identify the 3 among the numerals than the pictures for now. But regardless of giving wrong answers, she always asks for "another one" when we finish! We'll keep practicing!

Number Matching Game

I found this among a ton of other free printables at this site. The object of the game was for Honey Pot to match the numeral to the card with the same amount of dots. A little complex for her age, but we worked on it together!

Caterpillar Hop

We also returned to this game briefly (see this post for description) to review 123 and ABC.

Short day today, as we had a play-date with friends during the afternoon! We'll do plenty of review!

Theme of the Day: Number 2

Age: 21 months

Which Is Two? - Numeral and Pictures

I created these sequences in Photoshop Elements. She kept pointing out the pictures with one image in it though, so I'm not sure that she quite understands two yet! I've concluded that once we've covered 1, 2 and 3 separately we will have a day devoted to all three of them before moving on.

Sesame Street Videos

These were such a hit last week with the number one that I had to find some more for this lesson too. Here are the two videos that I showed her today. Please note that I do not own the rights to these videos - I found them on You Tube and they belong to Sesame Street!

Lauri Puzzle

I gave Honey Pot the next in her set of Lauri puzzles to play with. She again loved poking out the shapes and pushing them back in again. We worked on counting the pears a little bit. Then I showed her what 2 looks like with my fingers. Although she tried to imitate me, she couldn't get her little fingers to stay in place yet. We'll have to work on that before her birthday in May!

Paper Towel Art

I found this idea on Pinterest - here is the original post. With washable markers, I wrote the number 2 a few times on one paper towel, and on the second paper towel I drew shapes in pairs of two. Then I gave Honey Pot a paintbrush and a small cup of water. She really enjoyed painting with the water, and the result was fun for me to watch too. It was a fun craft that we can return to for various themes. And cleanup was super easy too!

Magnetic Pom Poms

I know I was going to give this activity a rest this week, but when Honey Pot found the magnetic pom poms in my closet she asked to play with them. So I quickly created this in Photoshop Elements and let her play with it. :)

Magnetic Pom Poms

I made this worksheet myself in Photoshop Elements, and again Honey Pot took to it very well. She enjoys playing with the magnets and is quite good at placing them in the white circles. Will revisit this activity for future number units too!

Which is One? - Pictures

This was a very successful game when we did the color red earlier this week, and it was just as successful this time! The first time through, Honey Pot correctly and happily identified the pictures that contained just one dinosaur, umbrella and fish. But for some reason, she kept pointing to the picture of two turtles. We returned to these throughout the day, and by the third time through, she had mastered them all!

Lauri Puzzle

I found a set of puzzles by Lauri on Amazon for a great price, and will introduce them one at a time as we cover each number. Honey Pot loved playing with this puzzle. She poked out the 1 and the apple, pushed them back in again, walked around the house with it... all in all a great purchase, and a wonderful learning tool.

"Make It So, Number One" Sesame Street Video

Honey Pot's Daddy and I are big Star Trek fans, and Honey Pot is a big Sesame Street fan. So when I came across this video on You Tube, I had to include it in today's unit! (All video credits go to Sesame Street - I do not own this video!) Honey Pot really enjoyed watching it!

I was so impressed with how flawlessly Honey Pot was able to identify the written number 1 each time. Afterward, I also asked her to show me 1 on her fingers (which she's known how to do since before her first birthday). We'll continue both activities for each number unit!
