We continued our alphabet this week with the letter K and some fun kite activities!

Introducing the Letter K

A couple weeks ago I started creating these fun pages to introduce Sweet E to the letter of the week. Sometimes I change up the activities--this week she needed to trace the K, stamp it, poke it with a giant pushpin, build it with playdoh, and paint it with a q-tip.

She loves the variety of activities, and the repetition of the letter is really helping her to learn it!

We hung it up above her craft table (which is now in the living room so we can be nearby big brother and sister while they're doing schoolwork remotely). And later in the week as she was looking at it, she asked to do it again! So she traced over her K in a new color, stamped it again, rebuilt it out of playdoh, painted it with a new q-tip and paint color...

And then she wanted to use the pushpin again. So I cut out the playdoh portion and drew dots along it for her to poke through. 

Kite Math and Fine Motor Practice

This idea and free printable comes from Teach Beside Me. Sweet E needed to read the number on the kite, and add that many beads to its kite string (which was a pipe cleaner to make it easier for small hands).

This was great practice for her! But quite a large project. We did a few together, and left it out on her table for a few days. 

She returned to it two or three times to finish it up!

Until they were all done! She was so proud of her work, she asked to take a picture of it herself. Though I didn't include those here because her fingers were in the picture! 😂

Letter K Dab Worksheet

Sometimes while Honey Pot and Little M&M are doing their work for school, Sweet E asks to do "homework." Though we do activities throughout the week, she likes to have a worksheet or two to feel like a big kid. So I found these great FREE printable dab sheets from Teachers Pay Teachers. 

And she loved it!

Sensory and Alphabet Review

I pulled out the kinetic sand (which, along with playdoh and paint-with-water books, are always at the ready during quarantine). Then I hid the letters we've learned so far inside. The toy girl with a kite were added just to keep in theme lol.

Then I printed a kite coloring page and added the letters for her to match up to the ones she finds in the sand.

She loves burying things in her kinetic sand to find, so she enjoyed doing this.

The letters came from a game, and had magnets on the back, so they didn't slide around as she was placing them.

Fun, quick activity!

Paper Bag Kite Craft

We did this during Little M&M's kite week, and it was a lot of fun, so we did it again. First I had Sweet E decorate a paper bag with markers and stickers. Then we taped on some streamers, and added a string (held inside the bag securely with a craft stick).

Then we took them outside and ran around the house with them! We loved watching the streamers blowing around behind us.

Little M&M and Honey Pot each made one too!

It was a pretty windy day! So when we were done running around, we tethered them to the umbrella pole and trampoline, and watched them blow around while we played outside. A lovely end to our letter K week!

K is for Kite!

Books

We've transitioned into doing a "Letter of the Day" instead of a "Letter of the Week" over here, to make sure we finish in time for Little M&M to begin preschool. So here are just two books, to kick off our K is for Kite day!

Letter Recognition

After reading our books, and talking briefly about kites, we completed one letter recognition activity. Today's pick: poking holes along the K with a giant push pin. This is always a fun one for the kids!

And here are the completed K's, held up to the window.

Craft

This paper bag kite idea comes from Lovely Commotion. I thought it was just great for their age group! Plus it didn't require a special trip to the park on a wind-perfect day, but merely a romp around the backyard. First they decorated both sides of their paper bags with stickers and markers, and we taped on some streamers.

Then I added a string, tied to a craft stick inside the paper bags, and the kids ran through the backyard, allowing their kites to float behind them.

They had such a great time with their kites!

It was a perfect way to begin our new Letter of the Day adventures!

Leap Frog Fridge Phonics

As usual, we began our theme by listening to Scout’s little ditty about how the letter K sounds. I would have continued with a “Which is K?” game, as I've done with other letters; however, before I could do so, the K had become our first ever LOST TOY!

AlphaBuddy King

This cute craft comes from a site I frequent called DLTK Kids. I printed the template, cut it out and then we got started. First, I let Honey Pot color in the letter and pieces using any medium she wished – dot markers, crayons and markers. She used each of them! I helped a little bit, as the joint effort helps to keep her interested for longer.

Then she glued down the K and all of its pieces!

Ta da! I made dotted letters along the bottom for her to trace the word “KING.” I guided her hand, but I think it is wonderful writing practice for her.

What Begins with K?

During dinner one night this week, Honey Pot’s Daddy quizzed her on the letter K. He gave her multiple choice questions such as this: “Which word begins with K: punch, kick or run?” And: “…dog, bear or koala?” She would answer correctly most of the time! I was thoroughly impressed!

K Lunch

I found this idea at an awesome blog called Meet the Dubiens. Super cute kid food ideas there under the “Fun Food Friday” tab. Check it out! So here is our letter K version:

K is for Kite!

I am so excited about this craft as it involves painting, lacing, letter recognition and counting all in one! First I cut out a kite shape from a piece of chipboard. Then I let Honey Pot choose three or four paint colors for her kite. She chose pink, purple and blue. I asked her to paint the whole thing.

After her nap it had dried completely. I used a hole-punch to poke holes all the way around it, and gave her a long piece of string. In the past I had used a shoelace, which I feel is easier for her little hands to thread, but it wouldn't have been long enough. So I just rolled some tape around the edge of the string. And it worked great!

Next, to enforce the idea that the word KITE begins with K, I wrote down a series of letters on some circle stickers that I happen to have in surplus. Seven of these were K’s.

I asked her if she could find a letter K. She did without any help! The X threw her off once though.

As she pointed to each one, I peeled them up and had her place them onto the kite.

Finally, I asked her to count up all the K’s. Seven. Perfect!

I love how this came out, and we have it hanging up in the kitchen!

Play-Doh Fun

No letter theme would be complete without some cookie cutter + play-doh fun! Honey Pot always loves this activity, and chooses multiple play-doh colors to make the cutouts again and again.

This time, we also made some “K monsters” with googly eyes and chenille stems that are in her play-doh supplies…

And some “K soup” as well! Yum!
