U is for Unicorn!

Today we did a few "U is for Unicorn" activities! We're wrapping up the end of our alphabet one day at a time, instead of weekly, so we can start fresh themes for preschool. Keep scrolling to see what Sweet E and I did today, or click on one of the links below to revisit similar themes from the past!

Books
We found these cute books at the library! "Uni the Unicorn" is such a sweet story about a unicorn believing in mythical little girls even though none of her friends do. And "Twinkle, Twinkle, Unicorn" might be a very simple board book, but Sweet E loves singing and music, so it was a hit! We sang it over and over and over!

Introducing the Letter U
Instead of our usual letter page, I created this for Sweet E to learn the letter U. She needed to dot all the clouds with U's in them!

She had no trouble at all, and it was nice to mix things up a little bit!

Scissor Practice
I found this fun idea at Hello, Wonderful but used my own stickers that I had on hand. Sweet E had to lead the unicorn to the rainbows, by cutting along the lines.

She's getting so much better with scissors; I love to see her learning!

Alphabet Review - Unicorn Game
I found a game board from Playdough to Plato, a free printable! And I added in the letters we've learned so far. Then Sweet E and I each took turns rolling the die, and moving our pom pom across the board.

We had to identify the letter we landed on each time, which was great review! And she likes to have our pom poms talk to each other lol.

I grabbed a die with just the numbers 1-3 on them, so we were sure to hit as many letters as possible. And we even played a second time!

Building a Rainbow
I decided to include this fine motor activity, because rainbows and unicorns just go together so well! I stuck some pipe cleaners into a piece of Styrofoam I had on hand, and gave Sweet E a container of matching beads.

She immediately got to work color-matching!

And of course the pipe cleaners had to talk to one another, because everything we do includes a bit of pretend play lol. How very much like her sister she is!

Unicorn Hopscotch
We donned our unicorn headbands, leftover from the Rainbow Unicorn party we had last year, and headed outside for some hopscotch! I thought this would be a great way to go over the numbers 11-20 again!

First we took turns hopping across and saying each number in order.

Then I called specific numbers for her to jump to.

She had a blast!

T is for Tea Party!

Today we did a few "T is for Tea Party" activities as we finish up the end of our alphabet. Sweet E loves tea parties! She received a small Minnie Mouse set for her birthday, and ever since we've been having tons of tea parties. It's actually been a great way to have everyone drink plenty of water while we're outside on these hot summer days. Keep scrolling to see what Sweet E and I did today, or click on one of the links below to revisit similar themes from the past.

Letter T - 2014

Books
There were more books at the library about tea parties than I expected! Sweet E and I chose these three to read. "Tea Party Rules" was our favorite. Such a cute story about a bear cub who wanders over to a little girl's tea party, where he is mistaken for a teddy bear.

Introducing the Letter T
I made our usual letter page for Sweet E.

She created the letter T in various ways: tracing, stamping, poking with a giant pushpin, building with tape...

and painting with a q-tip!

Teacups and Saucers - Larger Numbers
Sweet E seems confident with the numbers 1-10, in counting and recognizing them. And while she can count to 20, she forgets the number 15. So I created this activity to help her with some of these larger numbers.

First she counted up the dots on a teacup, and then she had to find the saucer with the number that matched.

This was great practice!

I'm a Little Teapot - Song and Craft
I found this tipping teapot idea at Danya Banya. First Sweet E colored in her teapot. Then while I cut it out, she fetched a paper plate.

She glued the teapot onto the folded plate.

And here is her completed teapot. But look...

It tips! Perfect little craft to go along with the song. So cute!

So next we pulled up this video from The Kiboomers on YouTube, and we sang the song several times. Sweet E loved doing this! Since she hasn't been to preschool, action songs are a pretty new concept to her. But we look forward to doing lots more of this when we homeschool preschool in a couple weeks!

Tea Party - Pretend Play
To finish our tea party day, we had to have one! Just like in the books we read, Sweet E put on some fancy jewelry, set the table with flowers, and invited some teddy bears to join us. (Honey Pot and Little M&M did too!)

We drank lots of "tea" (I kept a pitcher of water nearby to refill her teapot), ate some cookies, enjoyed some small talk (and some big laughs, thanks to the shenanigans of big brother and sister lol) and had a perfect tea party!

S is for Snake!

Today was "S is for Snake" day! We're speeding through the end of our alphabet, so that we can start fresh themes for homeschool preschool soon. Keep scrolling to see what we did today, or click one of the links below to revisit similar themes from the past!

Letter S - 2014

Books
These are the snake books we read today. "Elephant & Piggie" books have been a favorite around here since Honey Pot and Little M&M were little. Sweet E loved it too! We read it several times.

We even brought out the characters, and acted out the story!

Introducing the Letter S
I made our usual page to introduce the letter, and have Sweet E create it in several forms. She traced it, stamped it, poked it with a giant pushpin, and filled it with stickers.

I expected her to just put a few stickers inside the S, but she overlapped them and made quite a project out of it lol.

Look at all those stickers!

Missing Numbers
For our math activity I drew numbers from 1 to 10 on several craft sticks, with a few blanks. I glued on some eyes and tongues to make them resemble snakes. Then I wrote the numbers on clothespins for her to clip on where they belong.

She loved this, and every time she finished a snake, she slithered it along the table making a "ssssss" sound.

She did a great job, and I think we're ready to move onto larger numbers!

Playdoh Snakes
I found this free printable from Danielle's Place, and changed it just a little bit to add colors and words.

I slipped them into a laminating sheet. Then Sweet E rolled playdoh into snakes, and formed the shapes.

We added eyes too just for fun!

Hisss Board Game
Hisss has been a favorite game for years. Great for little kids! And it fit perfectly into our theme, so we played it today. Great activity to learn taking turns and color matching! Little M&M and Honey Pot played with us!

Bubble Snakes
We also made bubble snakes today! It just takes a water bottle with the bottom cut off and a sock put on the end. Then dip it into a bowl of dish soap with a little bit of water.

Sometimes they got really long before falling apart!

Little M&M joined us too! And when the wind picked up, Sweet E chased after his snakes that blew away!

So fun!
